Blending Ancient Bulgarian Architecture with Industrial Design

The designers' inspiration came from the geometric ornamentation and the combination of the four elements and octagonal composition typical of Bulgarian architecture. By flipping the standard form, they created a four-sided top part on an octagonal base. The resulting symbiosis of ancient architectural forms and industrial design has resulted in a unique piece of furniture that sparks the imagination in interior design.

Despite concrete being a cold material, the designers have managed to give the lamp visual warmth by painting the inner side yellow. This results in a soft light that fills the room. The lamp fits well in a variety of interiors and can be hung alone or in a group at different heights, forming a whole composition of light. The cord of the lamp, covered in a textile braid, serves not only a technical function but also adds a decorative element.

Creating this lamp was not without its challenges. The designers had to perfect the proportions of the lamp, studying elements such as top landing size, base size, wall thickness, and lamp depth carefully. They also spent a significant amount of time on elaborate fittings and finding reliable suppliers. However, their efforts paid off when the lamp was well received by society.

The lamp was first sketched in March 2016 and the first models were presented at an exhibition in Moscow two months later. Manufacturing began in July 2016. The designers conducted extensive research into ancient Bulgarian architecture and material properties before starting production. They used methods such as pouring concrete into the form, manual handling of the workpiece, and subsequent manual assembly of finished products.

The Trapeze lamp has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2017. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Trapeze lamp certainly fits this description, with its blend of architectural forms and industrial design.
